Júlio was a modernist painter and writer from Vila do Conde. Commissioned by Bernardo Pinto de Almeida, this photographic series was created for A Velha Casa (The Old House), an exhibition marking the opening of a space dedicated to Júlio’s work at the Memory Center of Vila do Conde.
The title refers to the book A Velha Casa, written by Júlio’s brother, José Régio. The exhibition brought together the work of three photographers — André Cepeda, Inês d’Orey and Rita Magalhães — each offering a distinct interpretation of the house where Júlio lived.
In her photographs, Inês d’Orey superimposes Júlio’s own drawings onto images of the house, creating a layered dialogue between photography, drawing and memory. His graphic marks become traces of an absent presence, intertwining with the rooms, surfaces and details of the house and blurring the boundaries between the artist’s work, his former surroundings and the photographer’s gaze.
Rather than documenting the house as a historical record, the series approaches it as a space of memory and imagination, where past and present coexist in a fragile and uncertain way.
All photographs are 80 × 80 cm fine art prints, framed in wood. Edition of 3 + 1 AP.
